Delton Porter, receives a miracle in the form of a double-lung transplant. On October, 4 2010 Mr. Porter was placed on a waiting list in an attempt to receive a lung transplant because of the severe condition of his lungs. Less than 12 hours later at 3:30 a.m. on the fifth of October his family received the call that a donation was made and he was off to surgery. As of October, 11 2010 Mr. Porter was recovering well, the lungs are a match and his body seems to be adjusting well. He is in great spirits with the ability to walk some and to finally be breathing without the aid of any type of assistance. He is currently in the Intensive Care Unit at Duke University Medical Center where he is receiving the best around the clock care. His wife Belinda on behalf of their children LeKesha, Victoria and Calvin wishes to thank all of you who have prayed for, called or visited them during this difficult time. The recovery period is expected to be several months and a lot of rehab is ahead but his prognosis is good. While this is a great event for Mr. Porter we do realize that it was because of a tragedy in the lives of others and only through their kindness and great generosity during a most difficult time that he now has this new lease on life.

This letter of request is being sent to you regarding a family in the Union Chapel Community right outside of Pembroke, N.C. Just over a year ago, Delton “Dell” Porter received the news that all families dread to hear, he was extremely ill. Dell was diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease. In July of this year he learned that his lungs were failing and that he stood in need of a double lung transplant.
Prior to his medical issue, Dell was employed with a private contractor for the government. Belinda, Dell’s wife of twenty years, works at a local day care. They have 3 young children, Lakesha age 11, Victoria, and Calvin, both age 10 and they attend Union Chapel Holiness Methodist Church. Before his sickness, Dell enjoyed spending time with his family and working on vehicles in his spare time. He is the type of neighbor and friend that everyone loves to have.
Currently, Dell struggles daily due to his condition. He has difficulty breathing and he does not get enough oxygen into his bloodstream. He is very weak and has little appetite. On the family’s front porch you will find oxygen tanks that assist Dell with his breathing. Belinda and the children all take turns making sure that Dell’s needs are met to the best of their abilities. Even through his trials, Dell makes sure his children and wife continue to live in a loving environment.
Dell is under the care of Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. His doctors are requesting that he begin rehabilitation at their facility. This must be started before the transplant can take place. Dell and Belinda will move to Durham for 6 to 8 months. Even with insurance, the financial burdens could be devastating. Dell’s insurance does not cover post-operative care. Expenses, such as, medication, travel, lodging, food, co-pays, and other expenses will be astronomical. Transplants are very expensive and insurance companies will not cover all the cost.
The Porter family is in need of financial assistance. They face mounting medical and household bills. The hospital is projecting that they will need between $15,000-$20,000 to help with the post-operative expenses. Any contributions towards our fundraising efforts will be greatly appreciated. You can send donations to Union Chapel Holiness Methodist Church. We are soliciting your prayers for Dell as he prepares to receive a “gift of life”. Prayer is needed for his family to remain strong throughout the process and for the donor’s family as well. A number of fundraising events are planned. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Diane Goins at 910-521-2051 or any member of the committee. May God bless you and thank you in advance for your prayers and support.
Sincerely,
Willie Scott, Jr. Pastor
